There's no National Health Service in Kenya - Blog by Andy Lidbetter

I fly out to Nairobi on Sunday and I can’t believe how quickly it’s come around. As it gets nearer and nearer, I have been thinking more and more about what we need to achieve.

For generations the people of Ol Maisor have been drinking water from the local river. The water is murky brown and it’s got sediment in it, however it’s what they are used to and they don’t know any different. We’re going to change that by providing them with a clean water supply.

Having said that, it’s not quite as simple as installing a clean water supply and expecting people to use it. We need to educate the locals about the benefits of clean water and help them change old habits.

There is no National Health Service in Kenya and in Ol Maisor jobs do not come with healthcare or sick pay benefits. People are ill more frequently and can spend up to half of their wages every month on Doctors fees and medication. Its incredible that we can make such a difference to peoples livelihood and health….
