Project Africa October 2013

I have just returned home after leaving the William Hill Project Africa team in Laikipia and I wanted to share some thoughts on the incredible experience I have just had.

I was amazed by how prepared and resourceful the group were in their individual ways. For example, Angela brought over four hundred tooth brushes / toothpaste from Scotland for every pupil in the school and Alicia had developed a fun way to educate them in the importance of oral hygiene. Andy’s address to the pupils on Wednesday was inspiring. Everyone in their own way brought something special to the project.

Beverley’s organisation of the trip was incredible. It was amazing to see her gently guiding the team to complete a range of tasks each day. One minute mixing cement and building accommodation for the teachers and the next we were making balloon animals for the under sevens.

The William Hill team are really making a difference to this community. Despite all of the challenges they face, the children and their parents seem happy and appreciative. The work they are doing will improve things in a way that is practical and sustaining. Access to fresh water, books, shoes and improved nutrition are just some of the things which are being addressed.

Finally, as a non William Hill employee, I wanted to say thanks to David and Beverley for inviting me to join the group this time round and to the rest of the team for helping me along the way with their humour, support and the welcome they gave me.

All the best to the William Hill team and keep up the good work.

Asante sana Mairi
